Because the filibuster will fail anyway, and because even if it succeed, Kagan is in the middle among likely Democratic nominees, possibly even better than average from that group. (Assuming nothing comes out during or leading up to the hearings that I haven't already heard about)

If the candidate was just a bit more extreme than Kagan, and if the Republicans had a bit more power right now, than I might say go for it, unless I believed that refraining would somehow make the Democrats more reasonable when the show is on the other foot (and I don't.)
