Their attempts to modernize Visual Basic is making the language an extremely complex Frankenstein-like construction but you are correct: the dirt-simple but grossly limited, unextensible, impossible to reuse crap still lies beneath the surface. In other words, Microsoft gets to check off bullet items while the masses still hack away using the old BASIC constructs like magic variables:

x ' No definition, it just is
x = "Now I am a string"
x = 2.5 ' Now I am a floating point number

BTW, X is probably used in a critical calculation in some other sub-routine and the user has just unwittingly wiped it out. What a damn joke this language is.
