the takeover of the Republican Party by right-wing extremists

The tea party and those with similar ideas have become a force in the Republican party, but unfortunately they haven't taken it over. Also they are not "right wing extremists".

that it’s about outrage over President Obama’s “socialist” policies — like his health care plan, which is, um, more or less identical to the plan Mitt Romney enacted in Massachusetts

Its pretty close to Romney's, even if "more or less identical", might be a bit of a stretch. But close, or even identical to Romney's plan, does not imply "not socialist", "not extreme", or "a good idea".

Also its about a lot more than just the health care plan.

Many on the left argue, instead, that it’s about race, the shock of having a black man in the White House — and there’s surely something to that.

There is almost nothing to that.
