the takeover of the Republican Party by right-wing extremists

The tea party and those with similar ideas have become a force in the Republican party, but unfortunately they haven't taken it over.

I don't know........its sure looking that way. They tell the Rs to jump.....and the Rs ask "how high?".

Also they are not "right wing extremists".

Yes, they are very much extremists.......a minority POV.

Many on the left argue, instead, that it’s about race, the shock of having a black man in the White House — and there’s surely something to that.

There is almost nothing to that.

I don't agree. Rs are not being honest about their feelings over race. I think Rand Paul is more typical of where Rs are at.
