Why should the gov't treat them with kid gloves?

Who said they should be treated with kid gloves?

The way they should be treated by the government is in accordance with the law, not outside of it in order to be either extra tough, or extra soft on them.

Beyond the actual treatment, the comment was inappropriate. Government has a lot of force, and the application of that force needs to be limited. Casual talk of grinding boot heels in to throats is unreasonable at best.

its just that they have failed nearly every step of the way.

So either, the task is very hard, or their incompetent, or both. How does threats of stomping on their throats help the situation?

They made mistakes and cut corners that led to the rig blowup.

They probably made some sort of mistake (although that isn't absolutely certain yet), "cutting corners" is possible but also hasn't been established.

Why are you wanting to go gentle on them?

Not talking about, or doing (in a figurative sense) throat stomping doesn't imply "they should be treated gently".
