Germans are obviously pretty smart and rather productive, but if they have to bail out a recalcitrant Greece, the fruits of German ingenuity go to waste. That recalcitrant Greece buys a lot of German products. Why do you think Germany is the second largest exporter ahead of the US? When I visited Geneva, I wondered why the Swiss didn't join the Euro system, even though landlocked Switzerland is completely surrounded by nations on the Euro. I thought it was because of their banking system. Now I see it's also because they didn't want to end up like Germany. No, you were right the first time......its because of their banking system and their status as a financial safe haven and neutral country. In addition, the Swiss are weird.....they like their isolation........I guess it comes from living on those mts during long winters.
