There you go again... trying to shift me out of one-liner mode.

I won't inhale, but I'll puff a little.

First an observation: Lotus threw a lot of computing power into this launch. That IBM NC was running a 200mh Pentium with 64MB ram. The network wasn't mentioned but I would bet it wasn't 10 base T ethernet. Makes one wonder how the real life performance will be.

Obviously it all comes down to control. Bingo. Control of the information flow is power. All these PCs out there whether stand-alone or networked make managers and IS departments a tad paranoid. They still miss the old days of mainframe/terminal total control.

The yearly cost of maintaining each PC on a corporate network is in the $2000 range. Believe it or not. Seems real high to me, that's why the number stuck in my head from somewhere. The hardware cost can come down all it wants. In fact the cheaper a PC gets the more attractive NC's become.

Won't be too many employees happy about getting a brand new NC on their desk where the PC used to be. The brand new networked PC will be a helluva status symbol. And a huge number of positions require that full blown PC (won't usually be a cheap one either.)

As to MSFT taking advantage of the OS. I won't touch that.

Leo
