Interesting info on Macondo spill.

I had dinner last night with a PhD PE who knows a lot about cementing and well completions. He agrees that the basic problem was probably a bad cement job. This is frequently the case.

It has been reported that oil and gas are coming up up from fissures in the sea bottom a considerable distance from the well. This leads to the theory that the gas/oil column came up the annular until it reached a porous and fractured formation, probably reasonable shallow and soft formation. The high pressure would do a "mother natures frac job" on that formation and lots of stuff would be sidetracked into that formation and eventually find its way to the surface.

If this is the case, then it will not stop leaking even with a successful top kill. In fact that might make the problem worse. Only cutting it off below the fractured formation will work. BP probably recognizes this because they have two wells drilling to intercept the well fairly deep.

Does anyone know if they had any lost circulation problems with the well that would add credence to this theory?

Another friend at the table is involved in some of the proposals to BP. He said that lots of people are suggesting ideas and proposals but BP is being keeping them all pretty close to their chest and not talking about them. The good thing is that the thinking of a lot of knowledgeable people is being made available to BP. The question is, how good a job will they do sifting through the ideas and implementing them.

Best to all,

JRH
