a dangerous delusion

It's funny I was just watching a PBS program (whole program):

pbs.org

Short promo trailer:

pbs.org

The show points out the importance of the early Whaling industry to the American economy. It was huge, and in large part formed the financial basis for wealth that built the industrial economy. Whale oil WAS the energy of the time. As the whales were depleted the whalers had to go further and further to garner their product. It required enormous skill and capital expenditures, getting vessels to the remote locations in those days was the equivalent of sending people into outerspace. Very similar to today's 5000 ft deep sea wells, and drilling in hostile countries.

When petroleum drilling, and refining became feasible it quickly and and nearly completely replaced the whale oil industry. Few people guessed at how quickly and completely the industry would convert and those who did became rich, very rich.

Really fascinating program and well done. Whaling was so much a part of our economy I think most people don't have a clue how important and fundamental it was to building our economy.

The people who seem to be AGAINST solar or alt energy I think are against it because it's not going to be done by pure capitalism. It becomes sort of engraved on their brains. I understand the sentiment but...

it would be the equivalent of being against our national freeway system. It might make sense theoretically, but it sure doesn't make common sense. Long term we are doomed if we don't lead in this area.
