>>Simple logic, it seems to me, says that we should never do anything that can cause this much damage, if we cannot acceptably mitigate the damage we know sooner or later will happen.

Are you prepared to stop using all fossil fuels...stop visiting your family in OR, never use any vehicle, only heat your house with solar, etc? Are you ready to do that?>>

That is pure hyperbole.

Only if you only care about drilling in US coastal waters. Is that it? They can drill the hell out of the fiords of Norway but you don't want drilling in your backyard. Is that your position?

The DEEP water wells in the gulf only contribute a small fraction of the world's oil supply. And it can only be considered in relation to the world supply. that oil does not just go to the US, but into the world oil market.

Its one less barrel we have to import. Do you know what are trade deficit was last month........$40 billion.....mostly due to oil. How can we have fiscal responsibility with that kind of monthly deficit?

Did you think it goes to the US only?

Yes, its sweet crude.......our fav. Alaska's sour goes to Japan.

And we could easily replace that oil anyway by developing coal bed methane that is much much safer.

There is no easy switching from one fuel to another and there is no safe fossil fuel.
