Electrons Unplugged

Newswise — In 2006, a research group at MIT revisited a century-old idea: Use high-frequency coils to send power wirelessly over large distances from source to receiver. That research spawned a start-up named WiTricity, which has been working to commercialize this technology. In 2007, Intel followed suit with a high-frequency wireless-power system of its own.

Curiously, engineers associated with the Wireless Power Consortium are skeptical of WiTricity and Intel's efforts. They regard it as unlikely that anyone will figure out a way to send power over distances that are substantially larger than the coils used to create the magnetic field. But even if this approach is limited to short distances, it remains valuable. It is now being used for powering materials-handling carts and trams, and for charging electric vehicles. In the future, inductive roadway systems could even be used to recharge electric cars in motion.
