Don't think that the amount of tax listed on your annual 1040 represents your actual taxes paid.

Never said it did, and the measure in the article was fed, state and local. There are many excise taxes but in the end they make up a small percent of governments revenues.

But frankly taxes are too low, and yes spending is too high. Both need to be corrected. Only the myopic see one single side of the problem.
