I just watched the ex president of Shell oil say they have huge oil tankers that can scoop up millions of gallons of oil at a time and they were used to clean up the huge spill in Saudi Arabia after the Iraq war.

I question the accuracy of this guy's statement. Even if there were huge tankers back back then which could scoop up the oil that was nearly 20 years ago. What were these ships doing in the mean time? That doesn't make sense to have large expensive ships just sitting around waiting for another oil disaster to happen.

Secondly, the wiki report on the Saudi spill indicates that a little less than 10% of the spilled oil was scooped up by ships:

en.wikipedia.org

That's almost exactly the amount that is getting scooped up in the GOM:

"Calm seas have enabled BP to burn as much as 9,000 barrels of oil from the surface, Suttles said. The Coast Guard and BP have been skimming oil from the Gulf. Oil accounts for about 10 percent of the 45,000 barrels of oil and water skimming boats have recovered so far, Suttles said.",?I>
