If it's like New Zealand, the police are quite entitled to require the name and address of people. Recording people isn't normally illegal in a public place. I suppose there are some circumstances in which it is. Such as disclosing Official Secrets Act people or something like that. Or if it's done with malign intentions but then it would evidence of malign intentions rather than illegal in itself.

It's not surprising that people are so defensive given the trends of policing. The days of the friendly bobby have long gone though they still exist.

It was silly of the police to go after the guy videoing them.
