Look rat, the problem never has been oil, it has been the human condition. We are undereducated and too insecure, so we live shallow lives which involves conspicuous consumption.

Some people buy huge SUV's to bolster their egos, others because they do not know better.

E.g. and to play to your point, everyone cannot be a millionair. Not enough resources and too much pollution. No one talks about that concept. So a responsible person lives simply.

The better educated a person is the more apt they are to be socially conscious and self actualized enough to not need to constantly show off with big cars, houses etc.

So it all comes down to people just not having the intellectual ability to be responsible and understanding what is needed to protect the planet; or even understanding the planet needs protection.
