I'm not sure that "giving the American people what they want" isn't the actual root of all our problems. Consider - if we had followed Jimmy Carter's advice and cured our oil addiction from the '70's to now, where would we be? But, that wasn't what the American people wanted, and it certainly wasn't what they wanted to hear. Raygun came in and ripped the solar panels off the WH roof. I know I didn't. I didn't vote for Carter, he depressed the hell out of me. I thought the way he dealt with Iran was pussy. Yet, doing it his way, EVERY hostage came back alive. With the country so dumb and evenly split, we'll no doubt keep buying what we want to hear from one party or the other for quite a while - until reality crushes this country.
