The catholic church is a political institution and it's insiders power hungry lawyers. Most legal guilds protect each other under the auspice of doing a thorough investigation. With God when you're an insider everything can be forgiven with a few quick prayers. And like lawyers they worship acts and regulations and generate oodles of paperwork. Most of the paperwork is to insure their grisly deeds follow the acts and regulations.
