I am very glad that I bought puts on the Index. They are S&P Dec 11s, so they are far enough out that time isn't a big concern, but they do move inversely to the index.

I agree. They have really helped buffer the micros in a way that I find very comforting. I've traded some of them a bit on moves--ie sold a few as the market drops, and bought back when it climbs, but in theory my goal is to maintain 15-20% of assets in these puts just in case of a huge drop to 5-6,000. I may not have the fortitude to not sell most on the way down though..:)

I'm glad you have found the strategy to be useful too.
