Freethought is a term thought up by belligerent godless folks to put a veneer of intellectual respectability on their hatred of God and moral virtue.

It simply sounds better than

The Society of the Godless
The League of Belligerent Atheists

and other names of societies in Leninist-Stalinist Russia.
