The 2010 arctic ice melt has not exceeded the historic 2007 ice melt. So we may now have a permanent change in weather patterns.

climateprogress.org

The scientists are saying what is happeneing is that as there is now so much open water in the arctic in the summer the arctic is absobing huge amounts of heat in the summer (the ice used to reflect it). For everal months the sun shines 24 hours a day.

The last time there was open water in the arctic was 50 million years ago. And this year we are on course for a new record arctic ice melt ecliping 2007.

So during the winter that new heat is released and the newly heated arctic is forming a high pressure area (for first time in 50 million years!)which is forcing the jet stream south and bringing arctic cold air down to the east coast and Europe.
