While it isn't clear whether anything illegal occurred or not, a couple of things we DO know are:

a) The fact that it was an "unpaid advisory period" is absolutely immaterial -- the use of the phrase was designed to mislead those who don't get it.

The position was offered as a quid pro quo, and implicit in that offer is the FACT that the position had value. That's what is required.

b) You cannot take the word of the president's lawyer. This would be like asking Johnny Cochran whether "OJ did it" or not.

An independent investigation of some kind is necessary to get to the bottom of whether our president is a crook.
