The true enemy here is not really Bush or Obama. It is the American public. We Americans have allowed this offshore drilling to continue without responsible interest in the total cost of the activity. Our insatiable thirst for oil has made us indentured slaves to countries that despise and revile us.

Offshore drilling is an inexact science, fraught with the dangers of miscalculation and fueled by greed and economic optimism. Preceding the Valdez there was Santa Barbara in 1969. The warnings were there 40-years ago – yet we Americans, still keep our heads in the sand, in spite of decades of true scientific evidence to the contrary.

Transportation devours over 40% of our petroleum imports. A simple mandate of 60-miles per gallon would lower the astounding amount of waste to 25%. Limiting engine size to 1800cc would a huge step in this endeavor.

If any nation could use effective high-speed rail, it’s the US – yet we fritter away billions in a useless effort to democratize Iraq and Afghanistan. Many ask why, when all we get is hatred in return.

The oil industry is a major contributor to the excruciating pain in the Middle East, to global warming, and now the rape of American and Mexican coastlines. These oil barons, in concert with Wall Street are killing America in slow motion...and most citizens don't fully comprehend what's really going on.

BP's execs must clearly be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. But the President must launch a new Manhatten Project to get our country off oil ASAP. Opening up more drilling offshore in U.S. waters would NEVER have made us more "energy secure"...Real security comes from getting off oil and we need a U.S. president to start talking like that - over and over again. We're wasting well over $10 Billion/month on war games in Afghanistan and Iraq and many experts have concluded that these overseas adventures are totally counter-productive. Let's bring the troops home and re-direct some of our blood and treasure towards real energy security.
