And the whole premise that Cheney, due to his past HAL ties, would have a motive to prevent something like acoustic switches from being required doesn't make sense. For all you know, HAL could have decided to provide the acoustic switches you're talking about. They're an oil service and supply company - they provide technology solutions to oil companies - that sounds like it could be right up their alley though there are lots of other companies who are in the business too.

Apparently, the 'acoustic switches' are not a fail safe option but just one more safeguard. Let's face it.......many new requirements will be placed on deep sea oil drilling going forward. I would not be surprised if 'acoustic switches' is one of those new requirements.

As for Oil Drum, its real easy to discern between the oil professionals and the novices.
