The Federal Government has agreed to streamline approval processes for a $4 billion iron ore project in West Australia's Pilbara.

The Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese says the project involves the construction of a 275 kilometre long railway and a new deepwater port near Karratha.

He says the companies involved plan to extract 500 million tonnes of iron ore.

It is operated by a joint venture between Aquila Resources and US based American Metal and Coal International.

Mr Albanese says the work has been granted major project status to speed up Government processes.

"It will generate some $2 billion devery year in export revenue and create 4000 four jobs during construction," he said.

"I spoke with the project manager yesterday who confirmed that with today's announcement, they're on track to start construction next year."
