Australia's government does not expect to reach a quick agreement with mining companies on its proposed 40 percent mining-profits tax, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Tuesday.

More than 80 mining companies are in talks with the Treasury department over the new tax, to be imposed in 2012, but Rudd told reporters he expected the negotiations to be protracted and would not commit to finalising them ahead of elections, expected this year.
