For the record, two more non-US companies in the deepwater GOM: BHP Billiton & Repsol. Thats in addition to Statoil, Petrobras, Total, CNOOC, and of course BP (its really British Petroleum not Beyond Petroleum) and Shell. IOW plenty of non-American companies in the GOM.
------------ BHP Billiton Ltd., Australia’s largest oil and gas producer, is studying the impact of President Barack Obama’s moratorium forcing deep-water drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico to halt operations. BHP was drilling at the Shenzi field and considering whether to increase work at the Neptune project, J. Michael Yeager, chief executive officer of BHP’s petroleum division, said in Sydney May 24. Two drilling rigs at the Atlantis field in the Gulf were diverted to help bring the BP Plc spill under control, causing delays and “uncertainty,” Yeager said. Obama on May 27 extended a moratorium on deepwater drilling permits by six months and suspended operations at all 33 exploratory wells being drilled in the Gulf. The spill began after an April 20 explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon rig, which BP leased for its Macondo well. BHP “continues to closely monitor events associated with the incident involving the Deepwater Horizon,” spokeswoman Fiona Martin said in an e-mailed response to questions today. “We are currently assessing the impact of the six-month suspension on certain permitting and drilling activities.” BHP, based in Melbourne and also the world’s largest mining company, has two drilling rigs at Shenzi and Neptune and two more it shares at BP’s Atlantis field, Yeager said. BHP today declined to give further details on how its Gulf operations are affected. ... bloomberg.com
