Az. Gov. Brewer Makes up Tale About Dad’s Death Fighting Nazis in Germany

June 2, 2010

(ChattahBox)— Well, how strange is this latest development from Arizona’s wing-nut “show me your papers” Gov. Jan Brewer? While whining about critics of the state’s harsh anti-immigration law, comparing it to Nazi Germany, Brewer made up a story from whole-cloth about her father bravely sacrificing his life, during World War II fighting Nazis in Germany. Such a record of service would certainly be commendable, if true, except for the fact that Brewer’s father spent the war working in a munitions factory in Nevada. And he died not from fighting Nazis, but from lung cancer ten-years after the war ended. Erm, how can Brewer explain away this whopper? A spokesperson says Brewer’s tale should not be taken, literally. Wait, what?

Brewer recounted her fighting Nazis tale during a recent interview with The Arizona Republic, while responding to criticism of the draconian anti-immigration law, which permits racial profiling:

“The Nazi comments . . . they are awful,” she said, her voice dropping. “Knowing that my father died fighting the Nazi regime in Germany, that I lost him when I was 11 because of that . . . and then to have them call me Hitler’s daughter. It hurts. It’s ugliness beyond anything I’ve ever experienced.”

It didn’t take long for Brewer’s Mark Kirk-like military record embellishments to come under scrutiny:

“Gov. Jan Brewer said in a recent interview that her father died fighting Nazis in Germany. In fact, the death of Wilford Drinkwine came 10 years after World War II had ended.During the war, Drinkwine worked as a civilian supervisor for a naval munitions depot in Hawthorne, Nev. He died of lung disease in 1955 in California.”

When asked to explain the discrepancy, Brewer’s flaks said the governor did not mean to say her father was literally “in” Nazi Germany:

“Officials with the governor’s administration said her statement should not be taken to mean that she was claiming her father was a soldier in Germany during the Nazi regime.”

Brewer’s lame explanation for her obvious embellishment of her late father’s military service record, so she could play the victim, doesn’t past muster.
