Smirk had a habit of appointing large donors to commissions that regulate the very industries the donors had an interest in. I don't remember you or any other wingnut complaining about it.
While I think this does happen in every administration, that's not what is at issue here. What we're talking about is manipulation of an election by payment of money or other things of value.
The statute, 18 USC 600, says:
"Whoever promises any employment position to any person as consideration, favor, or reward for any political activity, or for the support of or opposition to any candidate, shall be fined or imprisoned."
Its seems to you left out part of the law:
"Whoever, directly or indirectly, promises any employment, position, compensation, contract, appointment, or other benefit, provided for or made possible in whole or in part by any Act of Congress",
