The Chris Christie effect: New Jersey unions take big hit in public opinion

Examiner reporter Susan Ferrechio has a great report on public employee unions worried that their influence is waning. Near the bottom of the article, she notes that disapproval of New Jersey public employee unions is way up since New Jersey Governor Chris Christie started taking them on in an attempt to get the state’s perilous fiscal situation under control:

<<< ?A New Jersey poll released earlier this week supports Johnston’s assertion. It showed that since the bitter clash began between the unions and Christie, public opinion of the unions has sunk. The Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Public Mind Poll found that 44 percent of voters have an unfavorable opinion of the unions, up from 35 percent in March. >>>

Of course, Chris Christie has also taken a hit in the polls as well — but he recently announced that the state’s spending freeze worked better than anticipated, closing the state’s budget gap through FY 2011 without raising taxes or making significant cuts. That will likely help with his own approval ratings.
