The reason we are where we are is precisely because the "govie got out of the way" too much, in the regulatory sense....banks and investment firms went nuts with very shaky sub prime instruments, and no one was paying attention to what they were doing. Fed monetary policy has broader implications that to manipulate the housing mortgage market.
