Okay, we've jumped from the Marcellus shale which is thousands of feet deep to Powder River coal bed methane which is only a few hundred feet deep.

If water pumped into a shale gas formation never gets close to an aquifer that drinking water comes from - usually a few hundred feet deep at most - any chemicals in it can't contaminate a water well.
