Excellent point, Max. IIRC, LBJ was the president at the time of the Liberty incident. I think he was a total coward in that instance, and Israel knew it. At the time, they apparently didn't care if the the US liked it or not. And I'm still not sure why they did it, the excuse that the attack was to prevent the US from finding out what they were doing just doesn't seem to me to be enough of a reason. There HAS to be more to the back story.

But, to answer the question, the US should have made some severe retaliation efforts, not just meek diplomatic protests.
