Jeffery, I do not think or use the term scuttlebutt in a derogatory sense either. Although it can mean gossip. The word comes from, the news the men on ships talked about around the ship's drinking water barrel, which was called the scuttlebutt. Sort of water cooler shop/office talk. I think that's not too far off the mark and news gets around a ship or company pretty fast and as often as not its accurate, isn't it?
So I'm sorry the gentleman took offense but none was intended!
And I still think they should go for more money!:-)
