Safety was "almost used as a crutch by the company," Barron said. He said he was once scolded for standing on a bucket on the rig, yet the next day, Transocean ordered a crane to continue operating amid high winds, against its own policies. "It's like they used it against us -- the safety policies -- you know, to their advantage.

This feeling isn't isolated to the guys on deep water rigs.

I had many disagreements with management of a similar vein in my career... they are all over the chicken shit stuff and let the production/cost orientated issues get glossed over in a feel good risk assessment and with some worthless procedures.
(I was a blue collar schmuck who worked closely with operations and technical/engineering staff on day to day issues and projects.)

I hope the family's of the 11 lost men have the wherewithal to hang in there until they can get their due from BP.
It really tears me up to see the guys on the floor ignored, exploited, and in this case ultimately killed due to management's stupidity.
