We know how to build fast breeder reactors. It is true that we have a limited supply of U-235, because it is a tiny proportion of the natural deposit in terms of isotopes. However, we have a lot of U-238 and we can turn that into Pu-239 in said Breeder Reactor. That produces both more nuclear fuel and electricity.

We've know how to build breeder reactors for at least 40 years. Had we used this technology we wouldn't have a waste problem. The nuclear waste problem the US has today is purely the result of politics and not the result of the physics of fission. Waste from modern nuclear plants such as employed in France can be handled in ~40 years and returns to background levels in ~300 years. Why we don't use this technology is a mystery to any thinking person.
