Summary Box: Trade Deficit Up as Exports Slip

TRADE DEFICIT: The gap between imports and exports widened in April to $40.3 billion, the highest level in 16 months.

EXPORTS AND IMPORTS: U.S. exports fell 0.6 percent, reflecting a drop in global demand for American farm products and manufactured goods such as heavy machinery. Imports were also down, falling 0.4 percent as demand for consumer goods fell.

OUTLOOK: Economists are worried that a European debt crisis, which will depress growth in that region, will trim demand for American products, creating a headwind for the U.S. recovery.
