It all comes from the ability of photogenic plants to take carbon dioxide and water from the atmosphere and convert it into biomass using the energy from the sun. Carbon from carbon dioxide was converted into longer chain carbon molecules. Carbon dioxide on the other hand comes from a lot of different sources except Al Gore's back yard (grin).
