BP and their contractors were clearly negligent. This was an "accident" in the same way that driving drunk and plowing into another car is an "accident". As a result they have fouled the GOM. This is not a small deal... The repercussions are just beginning.

I'm trying to think of a private company doing something even close to as damaging. I can't.

I guess what I am saying is that its too easy to blame BP. Have you seen the contracts that BP has with the US gov't? One of them says its not likely any spill will effect the Gulf coastline because the rig is 48 miles away......so don't worry about it. And that contract was approved. Why didn't they just open the US Treasury and let them take all the money. It would have been easier and there would be less damage to the environment. Trust me, I would never have approved such a contract......it is a joke.....on us.

If BP is the bad guy, then the US is the enabler. To see it any other way only perpetuates the denial that has continued in this country for the past 30 years. American oil addiction is hurting us.......one way or another.
