From Brumar:

Obama was not only the biggest recipient of BP cash.

It also funded Obama's Secretary of Energy Steven Chu's Energy Biosciences Institute at UC Berkeley in the amount of $500M. Steven CHU selected Steve Koonin, BP's chief scientist, to be his undersecretary:

BP was one of three major oil companies that were going to appear in Washington the week of the blowout in support of the Kerry-Lieberman climate bill:

.... While Kerry did not name the three oil companies, a source familiar with the negotiations said Shell, BP and ConocoPhillips would back the climate measure.

Considering the above, its obvious BP was plugged into the Obama administration and the Congressional Democratic leadership. Now think about that when evaluating whether an onsite regulator would have over-ruled BP out on an oil rig.

Would a regulator who overruled a connected company like BP be risking his career?
