Not true. They MUST drill the relief wells at sufficient depth so the mud stack can overcome the well pressure. If they drilled to tap into the existing well high up, they would simply blowout their relief well. They ain't that stupid!

.loss of integrity in the well itself may explain why BP is drilling its relief wells more than ten thousand feet beneath the leaking pipes on the seafloor (and see this).
