someone from Mobile wrote into the local paper:

‘There is no outcry, and we do not act’

By most estimates, the BP oil spill has affected 50 to 100 acres of coastal Louisiana marsh so far.

Experts from BP and the government can’t figure out an effective way to keep the oil out of the marshes or how to clean the marshes once they’re oiled.

Why is there so much effort and public outcry over this issue, and very little over the 8,000 acres of Louisiana coastal marsh documented to be lost every year due to erosion? We know exactly what causes this problem and how to fix it.

It has been proven that manmade canals dredged into the delta and manmade levies along the Mississippi River are the cause of this loss. We know that eliminating most of those canals and levies would greatly reduce or eliminate that loss; but there is no outcry, and we do not act.

There is currently much fear that the oil spill will result in the creation of a low-oxygen "dead zone" off of our coast for years to come. But every year there is a well-documented "dead zone" of up to 10,000 square miles off the southwest Louisiana coast.

It has been proven that this area is formed due to fertilizer and chemical-laced runoff from the Mississippi River’s spring floods. We know that eliminating the drainage of these things into the rivers watershed would greatly reduce or eliminate this zone; but there is no outcry, and we do not act.
