As I understand it, a few years back a major quake(8+) occurred directly below a nuclear facility in India. The plant shut down exactly as designed and subsequently started up again without a hitch. Nevertheless, if you can avoid a fault it would certainly make sense to do so. As the saying goes, more people died in the back seat of Ted Kennedy's car than died in all the accidents in all the world's modern nuclear plants combined. Estimates of the deaths from the pollution given off by coal fired plants range from 50K & up per year in this country alone. We can thank the anti-nuke nuts for this tradeoff.
