| I posted here, years ago, that my commercial art career put me in with several artists who went on to great recognition and dollars. Among them was Dick Locher, who worked for the Chicago Tribune (still does) and wrote and illustrated the Dick Tracy comic strip for many years. He began, before I ever met him, as an employee of Chester Gould, the creator of Dick Tracy. When Gould died, the Trib contacted Dick to pick up the strip once again. He brought his son in to assist for a while, but his son died and the assist went to another. I saw, just recently, where Dick has turned over all the illustration to a new guy whose name escapes me right now. But, Dick still writes the strip and does editorial cartoons for the Tribune. A great artist in his own right. If you ever looked at the illustrations on the boxes of model airplanes in the hobby store, Dick used to do a great many of those. |
