"The reason 80% of scientists lean democratic and only 6% are Republican."

I see you quoting that statistic often, followed by pretty unsupportable interpretation. You might want to consider some other interpretive information.

Economists for example don't match your statistic.

Also, Social Scientists which represent the largest category do represent an overwhelmingly liberal population but how would you describe our advancements in this area. Urban social reforms were begun in the 60's and 70's so we should have improved social life significantly. That is what scientific endeavor does, improves things from what they were before, right?

Well then, what is wrong with this picture of progress?

Progress??? The divorce rate in America for first marriage, vs second or third marriage ...50% percent of first marriages, 67% of second and 74% of third marriages end in divorce, according to Jennifer Baker of the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in Springfield, Missouri. 70% of the Russian children who grow up as orphans become prostitutes or end up as criminals.

Progress??? 24 million children in the United States live without their biological father. One study suggested that children with stepfathers are three times more likely to be abused. Another indicated that 17% of female victims were sexually abused by their stepfather. percy-ricketts.com

Progress??? "The signs of this breakdown are all around us in the ever growing rates of alienation, apathy, rebellion, delinquency and violence among American youth," says first author of the book, "The State of Americans: This Generation and the Next"

Progress??? "According to the rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN) Statistics website , there were 247,730 victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault in the United States in 2002. Approximately 87,000 of these were victims of completed rape."

Those statistics are related to social science of the past few decades.

In the hard sciences like engineering, the professors tend to be liberal if the universities can find liberal engineering professors but not nearly as liberal as those in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Not to mention that there are far fewer positions for scientists in the hard engineering and math sciences where people tend toward conservative life styles.

But the students who go out and work in engineering careers, tend more toward seeking conservative lifestyles. And how would you compare the success of conservative engineering science of technology with the success of the social engineering liberal scientists? Not much positive you can say except that there are more of the social engineering types at the universities, which is probably the best place for them since there isn't much for them to do in the real world, if that is even positive.
