I think the Exxon thing was over punitive damages, not compensatory.

That's right. The original jury verdict in the federal court case included a punitive damage award of five billion dollars on top of an actual damage award of a little under three hundred million.

I was in the court room when the trial judge read the jury's verdict. He said "Five BILLION dollars," with a big emphasis on the "B." Exxon spent over a decade on appeal getting the punitive damage award reduced.
