CC - BP would have to swallow a big whale upfront to be honest at get go. This would have meant a day 1 mea-culpa on years of their shoddy practices, cutting corners, disregard for good safety practices (as JimsJim and others had been pointing out from day 1 itself) etc.

The magnitude of this disaster is dawning on them (and Team Obama as well) a bit belatedly. While I have distaste for BP management, I also empathize with them and was not critical when Hayward said "I want my life back". This is a stressful situation.

As far as Obama is concerned, he either got caught flat footed or deliberately chose to keep quiet to advance his own energy policy agenda as we will start hearing beginning today.
