I just attended a Dataquest symposium which focused on the "outlook" for 1996. One of the keynote speakers was Andy Grove of Intel who talked briefly about the prospect of the $500 set top or dumb terminal. His view (biased as it may be) was that the set top box would likely be a hit if it were more like a high end phone or on-line terminal/communication (e-mail) device. As such, it would likely have to sell for something well below the $500 price tag-- more likely it would have to be in the $150 range.
