Ted, Meg Whitman spent $60 million establishing her name here in California. Her ads are very personable since she speaks directly to the viewer.

This was in contrast to her Republican opponent, Steve Poizner, who never spoke on his own behalf, spent more time attacking Meg than defining himself, and relied upon Thousand Oaks Representative Tom McClintock to speak for him.

In other words, Meg didn't win because of how much she spent. Meg won because she related to the voters much more effectively. Tens of millions of dollars can help, though.

By the way, I think Moonbeam Jerry is going to make the exact same mistakes Poizner did. Meg's wealth and campaign spending will become a political liability for her, but I don't think Moonbeam Jerry stands a chance of winning. He's a political dinosaur, a symbol of the status quo in Sacramento.
