We know the constant of mutation. We can do all sorts of things with fruit flys and DNA. They can now tell when you and I parted ways genetically an where our genes come from. We are real close to creating brand new life out of basically inorganic material. The creation of organic life is really just a matter of chemistry. There is probably life on Mars and Europa. And I am sure life is pervasive throughout the universe.
