Father, brother plead guilty to murder of Aqsa Parvez

June 15, 2010 – 1:25 pm

GTA teenager Aqsa Parvez was murdered by her father and brother in 2007

TORONTO — Aqsa Parvez’s father and youngest brother have pleaded guilty to strangling the 16-year-old Mississauga, Ont., student in December, 2007.

The pair — Muhammad Parvez, 60, and his son Waqas, 29 — pleaded guilty on Tuesday to second-degree murder charges and will likely face automatic life sentences.

They admitted to strangling the teenager in her bedroom.

Waqas was initially arrested for obstructing a police investigation, but after further investigation the police added murder to his list of charges.

Aqsa’s father, Muhammad, was the person who called 911 on Dec. 10, 2007.

Parvez’s murder gained international attention after classmates at Applewood Heights Secondary School claimed that the girl had clashed with her devout Muslim family about her refusal to wear traditional clothes, including the hijab — the Islamic headscarf worn by some Muslim women.
